RTX/RT FIXED TRUNNIONS
The Motion Index Drives fixed trunnion rotary index drive encompasses a large range of sizes, ranging from our model RT100 up to our RT1250. In addition, special cam-driven devices can be custom made to order for your automation needs. RT Series fixed trunnion rotary index drives are offered in a fixed number of stations or as a flexible turntable with a servo motor or standard AC brake motor with encoder. With the addition of Motion’s patented NANO Indexer Technology, the RT Fixed Trunnion Series becomes the world’s most accurate barrel cam indexers. RT Series indexing tables are constructed with strength and reliability in mind. Robust design and components ensure this device will maintain precision in intense factory settings.

Indexing Rotary Table for Aerospace Manufacturing
Features
- Programmable Barrel Cam: Equipped with a programmable barrel cam for precise specifications.
- Zero Backlash Operations: Utilizes a preload condition for true zero backlash.
- Case Hardened Barrel Cams: Depth of 5 mm for enhanced durability.
- Needleless Cylindrical Cam Followers: Allows for maximum torque generation.
- Custom Floating Bearing Assembly: Accommodates slight misalignment due to structural size changes.
- Safety Lock Out Device: Allows for multiple angular positions.
Functionality
The RT series 400-Flex trunnion indexing rotary table is engineered to meet the strict requirements of aerospace manufacturing for Boeing Aerosospace by providing a zero backlash rotation system. This system is a “Zero Backlash” rotation system made for the positioning of reverse thrusters. This system was required to handle a reverse thruster and carriage with a total load of 4000 lbs with a payload of a physical size of 140”x 80” x 60” and a 5:1 safety factor. It efficiently handles a substantial load while ensuring precise positioning during assembly. The system is designed with a programmable barrel cam and a floating bearing assembly to allow for slight misalignments and structural changes. Additionally, the inclusion of a safety lock-out device enhances operational safety by preventing any movement during maintenance or assembly.
Cost-Effective Rotary Indexing Solution
Features
- RTX650/4 Rotary Indexing Table in trunnion rotation to deliver accurate, repeatable 90-degree rotations.
- The trunnion indexer has as a built-in bearing for the headstock, to further reduce mechanical cost and build time.
- The motor includes connector plugs for plug-and-play operation, simplifying installation and setup.
- A manual handwheel was added to the motor, allowing for easy manual rotation of the tooling in the absence of power.
Functionality
Motion Index Drives successfully helped the customer transition from an expensive and complex servo-based system to a simpler, more cost-effective solution using the RTX650/4 Rotary Indexing Table. The combination of a reliable AC gearmotor, open-loop VFD control, and a mechanically robust design provided the customer with significant savings while maintaining the performance and reliability required for their application. The solution not only streamlined the customer’s production process but also allowed for easy scalability, with over 40 units now set to be upgraded to this efficient, low-cost indexing system.
